Job market
Employment prospects in Luxembourg are good. The country has a stable economy, high salaries and low inflation rates. The unemployment level in Luxembourg is the lowest in the European Union (EU) (http://europa.eu.int/) .
The financial services industry is the mainstay of the country's economy. Luxembourg is the headquarters of the The European Investment Bank, and of over 200 banks and 1500 investment funds. This represents the greatest concentration of financial institutions in the European Community. In addition, 90 major insurance companies and over 250 reinsurance companies have a presence in the country. Currently 10% of employees in Luxembourg work in the financial sector.
A number of EU institutions are based in Luxembourg. These include The The Court of Justice of the European Communities, The European Court of Auditors, The Office for Official Publications of the European Communities and the Secretariat General of the European Union (http://europa.eu.int/comm/secretariat general/index en.htm) . Almost 8000 EU officials work in Luxembourg, the majority in the Kirchberg area of Luxembourg City.
In the industrial sector, steel is a major industry, which has exports constituting one quarter of the value of the Luxembourg overseas trade. Other manufacturing industries include aluminium, glass, cement, tyres and computers.
The agricultural industry also makes a small contribution to the economic growth of the country. Farms are often small and family owned. More than 30% of the labour force comprises of cross border workers, and the economy relies upon them.
Public employment services
The main placement service is the aforementioned Ministry of Employment (Administration de l'Emploi) which handles vacancies for the whole employment market. The placement service is free of charge but jobseekers must attend in person.
The Ministry also offers a guidance service (Service d'Orientation Professionelle) to advise both young people and adults on career choice, job hunting, applications and interviews.
EURES (European Employment Services) Network (http://europa.eu.int/eures/index.jsp) links the national placing agencies of the member states of the European Union (EU) (http://europa.eu.int/) /European Economic Area (EEA). Through the website it is possible to access vacancies advertised across Europe. In the UK you will be able to access the European Employment Service through branches of Jobcentre Plus (http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk).
Application procedures
A CV submitted for an advertised position should be written in the language of that advertisement. The format of the CV will vary according to the language used - see the country pages on France and Germany for advice on CVs in these languages.
Vacancy sources
There are two main daily newspapers in Luxembourg: The Luxemburger Wort (http://www.wort.lu) and Tageblatt (http://www.tageblatt.lu) , both bilingual French/German publications. Most job vacancies are advertised in the Luxemburger Wort on Saturdays.
Some job advertisements may appear in the English-language publication Luxembourg News (http://www.news.lu). Another source is The Financial Times (http://news.ft.com) on Fridays.
The Belgian graduate directory MoveUp (http://www.hobsons.be/) includes a few employers recruiting for Luxembourg banks, chartered accountancy firms and software houses.
Language requirements
In order to work in Luxembourg, knowledge of several languages is virtually essential. The three official languages are Letzebuergesch or Luxembourgish, French and German. Without at least French or German, gaining employment could be difficult.
The Centre de Langues Luxembourg offers courses in all three official languages at several levels.

Work experience
Work placements ('stages' or Praktikums) are an important way of gaining professional experience. You should make speculative approaches to companies in your field of interest.
Ministere du Travail et de I'Emploi (Ministry of Employment) Luxembourg (http://www.mt.etat.lu) may be able to assist in arranging placements for those aged under 30.

The website Jobsearch.lu (http://www2.jobsearch.lu/jobber/job) and the The University of Luxembourg (http://www.univ.lu/) advertises some 'stages'.
