THE PASSPORT OFFICE THE PASSPORT OFFICE FORMS PART OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL REGISTRATION. This Section is situated at: 217, St. Paul Street, Valletta - CMR 02 MALTA Application forms and other information are available from:

For eligible applicants residing overseas, application forms and Notes for Guidance can be obtained from Maltese Embassies, High Commissions or Consular Offices and through the Internet.
Applying for an adult's passport for the first time If you are a Maltese citizen, you are eligible for a Maltese passport. You will need to: 1. Obtain the relevant application Form A from:
- The Passport Office
- Police Stations
- Local Councils
- Travel Agencies or
- Trough the internet
2. Complete the application form accurately, paying special attention to dates of birth requested. With your application form, you should include 2 recent, identical coloured photographs, taken on a white background, one of which should be endorsed on the back by the recommender who should have completed the relevant part of the application form as indicated.
3. Return the application form to our Office by:
- handing it in personally at our Office
- mailing it
- sending somebody, together with his/her ID card, to our Office to bring the application form on your behalf, bringing also your ID Card (provided that applicant is 18 years old or over).
If applicant is under 18, application must be submitted by one of the parents together with both ID Cards.
4. You can also take your photo at our Office, for a fee of Lm2.50.
5. Pay a Lm12 fee on submitting your application. If you are sending your application by post, please enclose a cheque payable to The Director, Civil Registration Department.
You are to collect your passport from our Office in person. If you handed in your application personally, you may collect your passport after 4 working days. If you sent your application through the mail, you may collect your passport after 7 working days after mailing it to us. If your application form is not adequately completed, we will contact you for any missing information. In these cases your application may take a longer time to be processed. You will be asked to show your ID card when collecting your passport. If you are under 18 years of age, your passport must be collected by either of your parents. He/she must bring his/her ID Card. We also provide a next day service should you require it. This service is offered at an extra charge of Lm 13. Call at our Office, bringing with you the completed application form and the photographs as indicated above, and ask the Customer Care official to direct you to the member of our staff who will deal with your request.
Applying for a passport for children under 16 years of age Children under 16 years of age, must have their own passport. Children may be issued with a passport of their own which is valid for 2 years if they are under 10 years of age, and for 5 years if they are over 10 and under 16 years of age. If you would like to apply for your child's passport, kindly: 1. Obtain the relevant application FORM A from:
- The Passport Office
- Police Stations
- Local Councils
- Travel Agencies
- Through the internet
2. Complete the application form, ensuring that the details you fill in are correct. Both parents are required to give their consent by signing the application form in the presence of a recommender.
3. Call at our Office bringing with you:
- The application form, duly completed
- 2 recent identical coloured photographs taken on a white background, of your child, one of which should be endorsed on the back by the recommender who should have also completed the relevant part of the application form
- Your ID card and that of your spouse
The passport, if any, on which your child was previously included so that he/she may be deleted from that passport. If your child is over 14 years of age and holds and ID Card, his/her photos can be taken at this Office for a fee of Lm2.50.
4. Pay an application fee of Lm3 if your child is under 10 years of age, and of Lm6 if he/she is over 10 and under 16 years of age. You will be able to collect your child's passport from our Office after 4 working days, unless we have had to contact you for missing information.
Applying for a Refugee passport 1. Obtain the relevant application FORM A from:
- The Passport Office
- Police Stations
- Local Councils
- Travel Agencies or
- Through the internet
2. Complete the application form, ensuring that the details you fill in are correct.
3. Two recent identical coloured photographs taken on a white background, one of which should be endorsed on the back by the recommender who should have also completed the relevant part of the application.
4. Call at our office bringing with you
- Your ID card
- Official confirmation of refugee status
5. Pay a fee of Lm12. You will be able to collect your passport from our Office after 4 working days, unless we have had to contact you for more information.
Applying for a Collective Passport We also issue collective passports for children going abroad in a group of not less than five and not more than 50. The leader of the group is required to: 1. Obtain the relevant application form from: The Passport Office.
2. Obtain 2 passport sized photographs of each child, one of which should be signed by a recommender and a parent's consent form which should also be signed by the same recommender. Both parents must sign the consent form in the presence of the same recommender.
3. Call at our Office bringing with you all the above and your own passport. The cost for this service is Lm5 which are to be paid on application.
A card is issued for each child containing his/her name, surname and photo. These can be collected by the leader of the group 4 working days after the application has been submitted.
Urgent passports In special cases, the services provided by our Office are available on a 24-hour basis. These services are only provided to persons who require an urgent passport for special reasons. This service is provided upon an extra fee of Lm 23.
Emergency document This is a document that can be used instead of a passport and is only valid for your outgoing trip. It is issued to Maltese citizens at a fee of Lm2. You are required to call at our Office and within the same day you will be issued with this document. This Document can only be issued under special circumstances. Documents for medical reasons are provided at no extra cost.
Document of Identity If you are a foreigner and need a new passport while you are in Malta and there is no Embassy, High Commission or Consul representing your country, our Office will issue a document that can be used instead of a regular passport for your trip back home. This service is given at a fee of Lm2. We will need your flight details including the date and time of departure and your destination. Please follow the instructions 1 and 2, under "Applying for a Maltese Passport for the first time" (Persons over 16 years of age) and call at our Office personally. You will be issued with a Document of Identity within the day.
Renewing your passport Your passport expires every 2 years if you are under 10, every 5 years if you are between 10 and 15, and every 10 years if you are over 16 years of age. Please be sure to check that your passport has not expired before you plan to travel.
In order to renew your passport you are required to: 1. Obtain the relevant application FORM A from:

- Local Councils
- Travel Agencies or
- Through the internet
2. Complete the application form.
3. Return the application form to our Office together with your old passport and 2 recent identical coloured photographs, taken on a white background, one of which should be signed by a recommender, by
- Calling at our Office,
- Mailing them,
Sending someone on your behalf (provided applicant is 18 years old all over). 4. Pay a fee of Lm12 on application. If you are sending your application by post, please send a cheque payable to The Director, Civil Registration Department. You may collect your passport from our Office after 4 working days, unless we have had to contact you for missing information. If you are under 18 years of age, your passport must be collected by either of your parents who must bring his/her ID Card.
Change of details on passport If your personal details have changed you will need to apply for a new passport. Please follow the instructions for "Applying for a Maltese Passport for the first time".
Lost or stolen passports If your passport is either lost or stolen, you are required to call at our Office where you will need to make a solemn declaration or a declaration on oath at a fee of Lm 5. You will then need to apply for a new passport. Please follow the instructions for "Applying for a passport for the first time".
Arabic Translation on Passports If you are travelling to Libya, you should call at our office in order for us to translate the details on your passport into Arabic. The fee for an Arabic Translation on passports is Lm3. You will need to call at our Office bringing your passport and ID Card with you. You may collect your passport after 2 working days. Fees charged for passports
- Applying for a Maltese Passport for the first time (persons over 16 years of age) - Pay a fee of Lm12 on application. If you are sending your application by post, please send a cheque addressed to The Director, Civil Registration Department.
- Application for passport for children under 16 - Pay a fee on application of Lm3 if your child is under 10 years of age and Lm6 if he/she is over 10 and under 16 years of age.
- Collective Passports - The cost for this service is Lm5 and should be paid on application.
- Urgent passports for medical reasons only - There is no extra charge for this service.
- Urgent passports after office hours – Lm 23 extra charge
- Next day service - An extra fee of Lm 13 will be charged for the issuing of a passport the very next day.
- Emergency passport - It is issued to Maltese citizens at a fee of Lm2.
- Document of Identity - This service is offered at a fee of Lm2.
- Renewing your passport - Pay a fee of Lm12 on application. If you are sending your application by post, please send a cheque addressed to The Director, Civil Registration Department.
- Change of details on passport - you will need to make a new application form and pay the full fee of Lm12.
- Replacement of Lost or Stolen Passports - you need to make a solemn declaration or a Declaration on Oath at a fee of Lm 5 and apply for a new passport paying the full fee.
- Arabic Translation on passport - Lm3.
- Digitised imaging (for persons over 14 years) - Lm2.50
Lodging a Complaint If you have a complaint it is best to speak to the person who provided you with the service first. If you would like to pursue the complaint further, you may lodge a formal complaint. Please complete the complaints part of the feedback form, or write to The Head, Passport Office, who will investigate your complaint and advise you of the outcome at latest within 7 working days.

In winter 1st September to 15th June, Wednesdays from 7.30am to 2pm and from 3.00 to 6.00 pm ;Saturdays from 7.30 to 11.00am In summer From 16th June to 31st August, same as above, but the office will reopen from 3.00 pm to 4.15pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
