You must however, apply for a residence permit which is valid for five years and should be issued within six months of your arrival. The card is issued by the Ministry of Justice Luxembourg (http://www.mae.lu) . Students coming from other EU countries need to register in the commune where they intend to stay. With the recent enlargement of the EU, some of the policies that are in place for pre-2004 EU member states may not yet be applicable to citizens of some new EU member states. On 1 May 2004, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia joined the EU. If you are from one of these countries, excepting Cyprus and Malta, and want to work in Luxembourg, some restrictions on work permits may apply for a period of up to seven years. You should contact the Luxembourg Embassy in your country to see if any restrictions apply. The American Chamber of Commerce in Luxembourg has produced a guide to working in Luxembourg which includes advice on work and residence permits, the social security system and taxation. More information is also available from the Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres (Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
